Spoken text, recording by Franziska Roth
Johannes Brahms, Selected Lieder Vol.1, Op.3 No.1, text by Robert Reinick.
For years some of the world's leading singers have used Franziska Roth's privately commissioned recordings of spoken Lieder texts to prepare recitals and recordings. Now a large repertoire of such recorded spoken texts is available for individual download.
What makes these recordings invaluable to the established professional and singing student alike is that they demonstate what is essential to the text delivery in singing Lieder and arias. While paying meticulous attention to the precise pronunciation of vowels and consonants Franziska speaks the words expressively in the rhythm and phrasing of the composition. It thus becomes clear how text and music inspire each other and how this interwoven relationship can and should be reflected in the diction.
Franziska Roth was born and grew up in Germany. She studied musicology at Salzburg University and continued her studies in piano and singing at the ‘Mozarteum’ Academy of Music. She has worked as a language coach for opera productions at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Glyndebourne Festival, Hamburg State Opera, Le Chatelet and Opera-Bastille in Paris, festivals in Aix-en –Provence and Salzburg; and for staged productions in the Carnegie Hall, New York. Franziska has collaborated with great conductors including Barenboim, Rattle, Solti, Haitink, Ghergiev, Pappano, Gardin er and Thielemann. She is equally highly sought after internationally as a Lieder coach by many of the world's leading singers. Among the singers she has coached in Lieder singing are Tom Allen, Ian Bostridge, Magdalena Kozena, Gerald Finley, Kate Royal, Mark Padmore, Deborah Voigt, Willard White, Felicity Lott, Placido Domingo, Bryn Terfel, Dawn Upshaw, Thomas Hampson, Ann Murray, Simon Keenlyside and Kiri te Kanawa. Franziska is also regularly employed by all the leading recording companies and has worked on a number of award winning Lieder recordings. She is a member of the teaching staff at the Royal College of Music, London, the Cardiff International Voice Academy, and teaches as part of masterclasses and courses in Lieder singing. Franziska lives in London.
